binomess A wonderful recording. Harris and the "Bates Brothers Boy Band" have been playing together forever so their is tons of chemistry between the musicians on this album. Tight playing with tons of room for group improv. Bassist Chris Bates particularly shines Favorite track: Umm, Yeah.

about

Composer/trombonist JC Sanford’s jazz quartet will release their album Keratoconus on September 27, 2019 on Shifting Paradigm Records. The Minnesota-based group features Sanford on trombone with Zacc Harris on guitar, Chris Bates on bass, and JT Bates on drums.

Though long known in the Brooklyn, NY creative music scene as a distinctive big band composer and conductor, several more recent recordings feature Sanford’s unique improvisational voice on the trombone in diverse small group settings leading to receiving regular 'Rising Star' recognition in Downbeat Magazine. With the release of Keratoconus [ker-uh-toh-koh-nuhs]on Shifting Paradigm Records, we get to hear him to great advantage as both composer and performer, and in both cases his seriousness is balanced with a good deal of humor.

“I think things that are wrong on purpose are often funny,” Sanford says. “Humor is based so much on expectation, so there are a lot of ways to mess with the listener’s sense of what they expect to hear in a certain situation.” Not all of the tracks on the record are fun and games, though.

Sanford’s reputation for variety thrives once again on this new recording. Like his previous projects with his unconventional group Triocracy, and his hybrid jazz big band/chamber ensemble the JC Sanford Orchestra, moods, colors, grooves, harmonic approaches, et al shift drastically from track to track. The term “jazz” often only loosely represents the character of many of the tracks here, while others are clearly steeped in the tradition of his influences, and the distinctive qualities of Sanford’s writing are only enhanced by his and the band’s particular improvisational voices.
